Turgovishte is a town that keeps historic evidence from various epochs. The modern town appeared shortly after Bulgarian lands came under Ottoman rule. Mainly Ottomans lived there. Over the years, Bulgarians also settled there. Yet, the town kept its oriental looks until the end of the 19th century. Its name was Eski Dzhoumaia. The town hosted one of the biggest Ottoman fairs.
