The town of Kozloduy is located on the riverbank of Danube, to the north of the town of Vratsa. Its history dates a long way back but the town is well-known for two events. The historic revolutionary ship of Radetski reached Bulgaria through this port. Kozloduy is the place where Hristo Botev’s troops first stepped on Bulgarian land. A second important event took place in the 70s of the 20th century. The first and only functioning nuclear power plant in Bulgaria was constructed there.
Kozloduy lacks numerous tourism opportunities. Yet, if you decide to visit the town, take a walk to the national museum Radetski. The ship museum is an exact replica of the revolutionary vessel, which was unfortunately destroyed in a fire. It offers accommodation, giving you a chance to examine Bulgarian history and at the same time to rest peacefully near the river.
The nuclear power plant (NPP) of Kozloduy provides occupation for big part of the town’s population. In the 70s, young specialists from various parts of Bulgaria and from abroad settled there. They found work in the NPP an attractive opportunity. Today Kozloduy is a lively town that impresses with local customs and the architecture of the of the riverbank street.
Those interested in science can visit the NPP open doors day. The event happens once or twice each year. During that time visitors can explore the power plant which is strictly guarded throughout the year.
The few tourism opportunities in the region are quite interesting. You can follow the road of Botev’s revolutionaries from Kozloduy to Okolchitsa. Lovers of history and nature complete the trip each year. A river trip is organized as well.
Another interesting site is the remains of the Roman edifice Augusta. These are situated close to the village of Hurlets.
Danube and its low shore undoubtedly attract many fishing lovers. Legends have been told among these people about the large fish that were caught near Kozloduy. Apart from fishing, the place offers good picnic and relaxation opportunities. If you decide to go for a picnic, make sure you have brought some insect repellent. Though the entire region is treated to repel insects. the proximity of the river attracts mosquitoes and could ruin your vacation.
