The Iskur gorge has been deservingly named one of the most beautiful and virginal places in Bulgaria.
A wild river has cut through the slopes of western Stara Planina Mountain. Over time, it managed to form its own path through the rocks. Scientists believe that the river existed much before the mountain formed. It managed to keep its path by carving through the slopes and cutting Stara Planina in two.
A century ago, the place was almost inaccessible. In the end of the 19th century, a railway made passage possible. The region gradually got populated. People decided to settle there because of the peaceful and beautiful nature.
The best way to observe the gorge today involves the railway. Take the train from Sofia to Vratsa. Some of the nature wonders to be seen along the way include the Kutinski pyramids and Lakatnishki cliffs. The few populated areas in the region are also starting points for several hiking routes. Boukovets and Leskova peaks can both be reached from the village of Rebrovo.
Svoge is the biggest town on the territory of the gorge. The picturesque village of Zasele is also located nearby. One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bulgaria, Skaklya is near Zasele.
Vazova path, located between Zasele and Gara Bov, takes you to some of the most beautiful spots in the region. Locals say that the famous Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov fell in love with the region. The path carries his name. Vazov enjoyed the nature and silence and got inspiration for some of his best works.
